Teens

Dear Teen,

It’s important to start thinking about your health now to prevent future issues. Our providers can explain how preventive healthcare and annual visits during your teenage years can help ensure better health both now and in the future.

We understand that your teenage years can be confusing. Your body is changing, and you may have many questions. If you’re not comfortable talking to your parents about these topics, we get it—sometimes they might feel uneasy discussing them, too. Your friends might seem like they know everything, but remember that not all information is accurate.

We want you to know that your concerns are valid, and you don’t have to feel embarrassed asking us anything. We will answer all your questions honestly and provide you with the facts you need. Rest assured, our conversations will always be confidential.

You might worry that your visit will involve an uncomfortable exam, but this is usually not the case. Most visits will involve sitting down together to discuss your health and any concerns you may have. Feel free to ask about anything you like.

We look forward to meeting you!

Sincerely,

The Providers of The Women’s Group of Northwestern

  • Starting around ages 15 to 16, we recommend an annual gynecological appointment for teens. At The Women’s Group of Northwestern, these visits are typically consultative, with exams performed only as needed. Our practice provides a relaxed, comfortable, and private setting, ensuring that teen patients receive undivided attention and fact-based counseling to help them make informed choices.

  • Adolescent girls have many questions and concerns about the changes they are experiencing. A confidential relationship with a professional provider can offer factual information about various aspects of teen gynecology, empowering girls to make informed choices. The long-term health implications extend beyond pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections; they also encompass nutritional and lifestyle decisions.

  • We recommend that girls have their first visit with a gynecologist between the ages of 15 and 16, with annual follow-ups regardless of sexual activity. In fact, it’s best to begin these visits before becoming sexually active.

Additionally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that girls aged 11 to 26 receive the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, which helps prevent most cases of cervical cancer and genital warts. These guidelines present an opportunity to increase awareness among teens about female and preventive health. For more information, visit the CDC website.

  • Entering college is an exciting time for young women, filled with new experiences and independence. Our goal is to prepare college-bound girls for a healthy and safe college experience during the Pre-College Visit. We provide education on essential topics, including:

    • Campus health services

    • Emergency care

    • Preventive care

    • Reproductive health

    • Emotional health

    • Substance use and abuse

    • Campus safety

During this visit, we review medical and immunization history, perform examinations and screening tests as needed, and address current and future health needs.

Knowledge about teen gynecology is empowering. With this education and preparation, young women are better equipped for a safer and healthier college experience away from home.
